Our position
The casino at Obsidian Shore is one room in a hotel on a beach. It is there so that guests can spend an hour at a table after dinner, learn a game properly for the first time, or sit at the casino bar with a drink and watch the wheel. It is not a way to make money, and it must never become a way for anyone to dig themselves out of a hole.
Our staff are trained to notice when an evening has stopped being enjoyable for somebody and to step in before the night ends badly. A host who closes a table early, or refuses to serve a guest for the rest of the evening, has the full backing of the management and never has to justify it afterwards.
Not one thing on this website is a game of chance. There is no game here to play, no stake to place and no payment to make. Everything we offer happens in the building, in front of a dealer, with chips bought at the cage.
Strictly adults only
- Entry to Caldera Hall begins at 18, or at the higher age where local rules set a higher one.
- Photo identification is checked at the casino door on every visit, however old a visitor appears and however many nights they have already stayed.
- We accept a passport, a national identity card or a driving licence. We do not accept photocopies, photographs of documents, or a card that belongs to somebody else.
- Younger members of a family are welcome in the rooms, in all four kitchens and in the 34°C pool at family hours. They do not cross the casino threshold under any circumstances.
- Staff will refuse entry without debate where a document is missing or unclear, and they will not be overruled by a manager.
What a host will arrange for you
- A time limit. Tell a host how long you mean to stay. They will find you when the time is up and say so out loud.
- A spending ceiling. Name a figure at the cage before you buy chips and the floor team will stop selling you more once you reach it.
- A cooling-off period. Ask to be turned away at the casino door for a week, a month or the rest of your stay.
- Self-exclusion. A written, confidential agreement for a fixed term. We do not shorten it on request, no matter how reasonable the request sounds at two in the morning.
Credit is never extended anywhere in the resort. There is no cash machine on the casino floor, the bar will not run a tab against the casino, and room accounts cannot be used to buy chips.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Playing longer, or spending more, than you decided before you sat down.
- Going back to the table to recover money you have already lost.
- Using money meant for rent, bills, travel or someone else's needs.
- Borrowing, selling something or hiding what you are doing in order to keep playing.
- Feeling restless or short-tempered on a day you cannot play.
- Choosing the casino floor over sleep, over work, or over the people you arrived with.
If two or three of these sound like you, say so to a host or contact one of the organisations below. Nothing you tell our staff is written into a guest record or passed to anybody else.
Independent help
These three services are free, confidential and completely independent of Obsidian Shore Casino Resort. No money passes between us and any of the three.
- Gambling Therapy — online groups, moderated forums and live chat in several languages: gamblingtherapy.org
- Gamblers Anonymous — a worldwide network of meetings, some in a room and some over video: gamblersanonymous.org
- Gam-Anon — for the partner, parent or friend of somebody who gambles: gam-anon.org
Reception also keeps the current details of the nearest local support line at the desk and will hand them over quietly, without a question and without being asked twice.
Training on the floor
Nobody works a shift in Caldera Hall before they have been briefed on the age check and on how to approach a guest who is having a bad night. The briefing is repeated every six months and after any incident, and the dealers themselves write half of the material, because they are the ones who see it first.
Talk to us before you arrive
If you would rather set something up in advance — a limit, an exclusion, or just a word with a host when you check in — write to [email protected] and address it to the casino manager. It is read by one person and not shared with the rest of the team unless you ask for that.
